Crota's End is a raid added in Season of the Witch. It is a reprise of the raid of the same name from Destiny, taking place in the Hellmouth on the Moon. The raid is free for all players and can be launched from the Legends node in the Director.
Chalice of Light
The Chalice of Light is the core mechanic used throughout the Crota's End raid. It involves passing a Hive artifact between players to gain the Enlightened buff, which is required to interact with various raid mechanics.
- Chalice of Light
- A glowing Hive artifact that can be picked up by a player. While holding it, a meter above the super bar fills over time. Kills near the carrier can accelerate this charge.
- Engulfed in Light
- A 10-second debuff received when the Chalice of Light meter becomes full. If the Chalice is not taken by another teammate within this time, the player holding it will die.
- Enlightened
- A buff received when another player takes the Chalice of Light from you after it was fully charged (i.e., after you were Engulfed in Light). The Enlightened buff has no timer and is consumed when used to interact with specific raid mechanics (for example activating lamps, picking up swords, passing through barriers, damaging the Oversoul, using Expunge). Players cannot pick up the Chalice while Enlightened.
- Drained of Light
- A 45-second debuff received after using the Enlightened buff. While Drained of Light, a player cannot pick up the Chalice of Light.
- Preservation Node
- Specific locations where a player holding the Chalice of Light can deposit ("preserve") it. This is often used to safely store the Chalice during certain phases or to activate subsequent mechanics. The Chalice can be picked up again from the node. Depositing the Chalice does not grant the Enlightened buff or the Drained of Light debuff if the meter wasn't full.
It's recommended to establish an order for passing the Chalice at the start of the raid to ensure smooth execution of mechanics in each encounter.
Starting the Raid
Guardians load into the Hellmouth near a large pit. In front of them is a circular plate and the Chalice of Light resting on a dock.
Objective
Energize the plate to open the entrance to the Abyss.
Description
One player picks up the Chalice of Light. As it charges, Thralls and occasional Knights will spawn. Once the Chalice is fully charged, the player becomes Engulfed in Light, and another player must take the Chalice from them. The first player, now Enlightened, interacts with the plate to deposit the energy. This process is repeated, passing the Chalice and using the Enlightened buff on the plate, which speeds up the construction of a bridge over the Abyss. Once the bridge is fully formed, players run across and jump into the pit to begin the first encounter.
The Abyss
Objective
Navigate the dark labyrinth, activate lamps, and build the bridge to escape the Abyss.
Description
The first encounter takes place in a dark maze filled with pitfalls, swinging pendulum traps, and an endless horde of Thralls. Players must navigate this maze using a series of lamps.
Two debuffs are active in this encounter:
- Weight of Darkness: Stacks up to x10 as players spend time in the darkness. Higher stacks slow movement speed, eventually preventing sprinting and jumping. Standing near an activated lamp slowly removes stacks.
- Engulfed in Darkness: A 60-second timer that wipes the fireteam if it reaches zero. Activating a lamp or preserving the Chalice of Light resets this timer to 60 seconds for all players.
Players must use the Chalice of Light mechanic to become Enlightened. An Enlightened player can then interact with a lamp to activate it. Activated lamps provide light, reset the Engulfed in Darkness timer, and slowly reduce Weight of Darkness for nearby players. However, lamps explode after about 12-15 seconds, killing any nearby Guardians.
Some lamps along the path have a Preservation Node next to them. The Chalice must be deposited into this node to activate the next set of lamps in the maze. The locations of these nodes are somewhat random within sections. Players can tell if a node is present by checking if the next lamp ahead is dark; if it is, the current lamp likely has the node. Picking up the Chalice from a node also resets the Engulfed in Darkness timer.
Players need to move as a group, continuously passing the Chalice, getting Enlightened, activating lamps, and using preservation nodes when necessary. Unstoppable Ogres appear near the end of the maze.
At the end of the labyrinth, the fireteam reaches a final plate overlooking a chasm. A Chalice dock is present. Preserving and retrieving the Chalice here begins the final sequence. Players must stand on the plate while passing the Chalice to get Enlightened buffs. Using the Enlightened buff on the plate speeds up the construction of the bridge across the chasm. Defend against waves of enemies, including the Unstoppable Ogres, until the bridge is fully formed ("The path forward is clear"). Run across the bridge, avoiding the final pendulums, and enter the light to complete the encounter.
Conservation of Energy (Challenge)
To complete the Abyss challenge, players may only activate lamps that have a Preservation Node next to them. Lighting any lamp without an adjacent node will fail the challenge. Careful Chalice management and potentially faster traversal methods (like Grapple Grenades or Eager Edge swords) are needed to manage the Engulfed in Darkness timer.
First Secret Chest
The first secret chest is located behind one of the glowing Hive doors found along the walls throughout the Abyss maze. The specific door containing the chest is random each run. Players should check behind each lit door they encounter. One source suggests dying to Thralls near a door might increase spawn chance, but this is unconfirmed.
Oversoul Throne Bridge
Objective
Build the bridge, cross the chasm, defeat Gatekeepers, and secure the far side.
Description
This encounter requires the fireteam to construct another bridge across a large chasm while managing Annihilator Totems and defeating special Hive enemies.
Key Mechanics
- Bridge Construction: Standing on the central plate on either side builds the bridge. An Enlightened buff can be used on the plate to speed up construction.
- Annihilator Totems: Two totems flank the central plate on each side. While the bridge plate on a side is being activated (stood on or empowered), players must stand under both totems on that *same* side. Failure to do so causes the totems to charge up and wipe the team.
- Crossing the Bridge: Only players holding the Chalice of Light or a Hive Sword dropped by a Swordbearer can cross the bridge. Attempting to cross otherwise results in death.
- Swordbearers:Special Knights that spawn on the starting side. They drop a Hive Sword upon defeat.
- Picking up Swords: A player must be Enlightened to pick up a Hive Sword. Doing so consumes the Enlightened buff. Swords disappear if left on the ground for too long and cannot be picked up again if dropped.
- Gatekeepers: Powerful, blue-glowing Knights that spawn on the far side. They can only be damaged by the Hive Swords.
- Preserving Swords: After defeating a Gatekeeper, the sword wielder must deposit the sword into one of five preservation docks located on the far side.
- Barrier Knights spawn throughout the encounter.
Strategy
The primary goal is to get all six Guardians across the bridge. This involves a cycle of getting players Enlightened, killing Swordbearers, sending sword wielders across to kill Gatekeepers, and preserving the swords.
- tart: Pick up the Chalice. Divide the team, typically with players assigned to the left totem, right totem, and middle plate on the starting side. Begin passing the Chalice to get players Enlightened.
- Build Bridge: Stand on the middle plate and under the totems. Use the first Enlightened buff to start/speed up bridge construction. A Swordbearer will spawn shortly after construction begins.
- First Crossing: Once the bridge is formed and a player is Enlightened, kill the Swordbearer. The Enlightened player picks up the sword. It's recommended that the player currently holding the Chalice crosses with the sword wielder for support.
- Far Side: The sword wielder kills the Gatekeeper. The Chalice holder helps clear adds and should preserve the Chalice in the node on the far side. The sword wielder preserves the sword in a dock after killing the Gatekeeper. Killing a Gatekeeper spawns the next Swordbearer on the starting side.
- Repeat: Continue the cycle: get players Enlightened, kill Swordbearer, send sword wielder across, kill Gatekeeper, preserve sword.
- Shift Responsibility: Once three players are on the far side, they take over bridge-building duties (one on plate, two under totems). The starting side players no longer need to manage totems and can focus on getting swords and crossing.
- Final Crossings: Send the remaining players across one by one. When only two players remain on the starting side, one takes a sword, and the other carries the Chalice across.
- Final Phase: Once all six players are across and five swords are preserved, waves of Hive attack. Pass the Chalice around to get players Enlightened again (the last person can preserve it). Eventually, five Gatekeepers will spawn simultaneously. Enlightened players must grab the preserved swords and defeat all five Gatekeepers to end the encounter. Stay off the middle plate during this phase to avoid activating the totems unnecessarily.
Precarious Balance (Challenge)
To complete the Bridge challenge, players crossing the bridge must do so only while no one is standing on the plate that builds it. This means the plate holder must step off just before the player crosses, causing the bridge to start deconstructing. The crossing player will need to jump over the resulting gap. Coordinate timing carefully.
Thrallway
After the bridge encounter, players enter a short corridor section often called the "Thrallway" or "Shrieker Sprint".
Objective
Navigate the hallway by bypassing barriers and killing Shriekers.
Description
The hallway is filled with Thralls and blocked by several semi-transparent green barriers. Only players who are Enlightened or holding the Chalice of Light can pass through these barriers. Once through, they must kill a Shrieker on the other side. Killing the Shrieker drops the barrier for the rest of the team. This process repeats a few times. At the end of the hallway, preserve the Chalice in the dock to open a hole in the floor leading to the next encounter.
Second Secret Chest
The second secret chest is located at the end of the Thrallway and is timed. After the final barrier drops (usually after the second Shrieker is killed), the player holding the Chalice must sprint to the end of the hall and preserve it in the dock before a door closes. If done quickly enough, the door will partially close then reopen, revealing the chest.
Note on Third Secret Chest
As of the initial release and subsequent updates mentioned in reference materials, the third secret chest tied to a Triumph had not been definitively located. Some theories suggested it might be related to the guaranteed Deepsight Resonance chest mechanic or that the associated Triumph was bugged.
Ir Yut, the Deathsinger

Objective
Defeat Ir Yut, the Deathsinger, before she completes her deadly song.
Description
This is the first major boss fight of the raid against Ir Yut, a powerful Hive Wizard.
Starting the Encounter
The fight begins in an underground chamber. Players exit into the main arena, which features towers on the left and right, and a central structure with multiple levels. Split the team (for example three left, three right) and clear initial waves of Hive, focusing on Blistered Knights. Killing these knights and enough enemies eventually opens Shriekers guarding the central room of the upper structure. Destroy these Shriekers to drop the barriers and gain access to the Chalice of Light inside.
Setup Phase
The main mechanic involves finding and killing special Wizards called Shieldsingers, hidden behind green barriers in various rooms around the arena.
- Finding Wizards: There are seven potential spawn locations for Shieldsingers: top and bottom floors of the left tower, top and bottom floors of the right tower, and three rooms in the rear upper structure (left, middle, right). Each location will contain either a Shieldsinger Wizard or a non-hostile Shrieker. Players need to identify which rooms contain the Wizards. A designated "scout" player, ideally using Wish-Ender (for its Truesight) or Nightstalker's Stylish Executioner, can quickly check these locations while the team passes the Chalice. Radar can also help: Shriekers appear as large vehicle circles, Wizards as standard enemy dots.
- Enlightenment: Pass the Chalice to get enough players Enlightened to match the number of active Shieldsingers. The number starts at three, then increases to four, then five for subsequent phases if needed. Extra Enlightened buffs can be used for the Expunge mechanic during DPS. The last player holding the Chalice after everyone is buffed should preserve it in the node near the arena entrance (below the crystal room).
- Killing Wizards: Enlightened players go to their assigned Wizard rooms. Passing through the barrier consumes the Enlightened buff. Coordinate to kill all Shieldsingers simultaneously. Killing the first Shieldsinger (or taking too long, ~3 minutes) starts Ir Yut's song.
Dark Liturgy and DPS Phase
- Timer: Once the first Wizard dies (or time runs out), the "Dark Liturgy" timer begins (around 45 seconds). This is the wipe mechanic and the DPS window.
- Vulnerability: Ir Yut becomes vulnerable to damage once all active Shieldsingers are dead.
- Damage Check: The fireteam must deal enough damage to lower Ir Yut's health past a specific notch (roughly 25-33% of her total health) before the Dark Liturgy timer expires. Failure results in a wipe.
- Expunge Mechanic: Players still holding an Enlightened buff can approach Ir Yut while she's vulnerable and interact to "Expunge". This deals significant damage and potentially increases her damage taken for that phase. It's recommended to have at least one player Expunge at the start of DPS.
- DPS Strategy: Group up for damage, often near the central platform where the Chalice was found. Well of Radiance is highly recommended for survival and damage buff. Divinity is useful due to Ir Yut's mobility and small crit spot. Effective weapons include Rocket Launchers (with Gjallarhorn), Linear Fusion Rifles, Leviathan's Breath, The Lament, or Thunderlord.
If the damage check is met, Ir Yut stops her song, becomes immune again, and the cycle repeats with an increased number of Shieldsingers. Defeat Ir Yut to complete the encounter.
Equal Vessels (Challenge)
For the Ir Yut challenge, the Chalice of Light must be passed between players in the same fixed order throughout the entire encounter, including during DPS phases. The preservation node cannot be used to break the cycle. This requires constant Chalice management and tracking.
Crota, Son of Oryx

Objective
Defeat Crota, Son of Oryx.
Description
The final encounter pits the fireteam against Crota himself in the same arena used for the Ir Yut fight.
Starting the Encounter
All six players must gather around the large crystal in the central room (where the Chalice was for Ir Yut) and "kiss the crystal" (touch it simultaneously). This starts the encounter. Barriers briefly trap the team inside; Crota spawns outside. Once barriers drop, split the team (for example three left, three right) and clear initial adds.
Encounter Cycle and Setup
The core loop involves obtaining Hive Swords to break Crota's shield, initiating a DPS phase while managing his Oversoul attack.
- Presence of Crota Debuff: Active throughout the fight, this prevents swapping the Chalice of Light *except* when standing within a Pool of Light. Note: Unlike Destiny 1, this does not prevent health regeneration.
- Pools of Light: Glowing circles of light that appear in one of five designated locations around the arena. The Chalice can only be passed while inside one. The Pool relocates after each successful swap.
- Spawning Swordbearers: Defeat the Hive Boomer Knights located on the top floors of the left and right towers (two on each side, total four). This spawns two Ogres and one Swordbearer in the central pit area (near the Chalice starting node).
- Getting Swords: Pass the Chalice within Pools of Light to get players Enlightened. Kill the Swordbearer (Aeon finishers recommended for Heavy ammo). An Enlightened player must pick up the dropped Hive Sword, consuming their buff. The sword disappears quickly if not picked up.
- Breaking Crota's Shield: The player(s) with Hive Swords must attack Crota to break his overshield. It takes 2-3 swords normally, but potentially fewer (1-2) if Crota is debuffed with Tractor Cannon or Shadowshot. Once the shield breaks, the DPS phase begins.
- Strategy Note: Teams can either use swords one by one as they acquire them, or gather 2-3 swords and attack simultaneously (required for the challenge). Using swords individually can be risky as Crota attacks the sword wielder. A Titan using Stronghold gauntlets with a regular sword can taunt Crota to draw aggro.
DPS Phase
- Damage Window: Once Crota's shield breaks, he becomes vulnerable.
- Oversoul Mechanic: During the DPS phase, Crota summons the Oversoul, a giant green eye structure at the back of the arena. A 30-second timer ("The Oversoul") appears on screen. If it reaches zero, the team wipes.
- Stopping the Wipe: An Enlightened player must shoot and destroy the Oversoul before the timer expires. Destroying the Oversoul immediately ends the DPS phase. Aim to destroy it with only a few seconds remaining to maximize damage time.
- Expunge: Players with leftover Enlightened buffs can Expunge on Crota for extra damage during the DPS phase.
- DPS Location & Weapons: Close-range DPS near Crota is common. Multiple Wells of Radiance are highly recommended for survival, potentially protected by a Ward of Dawn on higher difficulties. The Lament or Legend of Acrius are strong close-range options. Burning Maul Titans (with Pyrogale Gauntlets optionally) can stunlock Crota. Long-range DPS from the central structure using Rocket Launchers (with Gjallarhorn) is also viable. Ensure appropriate buffs (Surge mods, Lumina) and debuffs (Tractor Cannon, Divinity) are used.
Final Stand
When Crota's health reaches the final segment (around 25%), he enters Final Stand.
- Crota becomes immune briefly and may perform a slam attack; players should reposition.
- His shield drops again.
- The Oversoul reappears with a shorter timer (for example 20 seconds). An Enlightened player can shoot it to extend the timer by 10 seconds.
- After the first Final Stand Oversoul is destroyed (or times out), another indestructible Oversoul spawns with a final wipe timer.
- The fireteam must defeat Crota before this final timer expires. Use all remaining Supers and Heavy ammo.
Repeat the cycle of getting swords, breaking the shield, DPS, and managing the Oversoul until Crota reaches Final Stand, then execute the final burn.
All For One (Challenge)
To complete the Crota challenge, his shield must be taken down using three swords attacking simultaneously each time before the DPS phase. Using fewer than three swords, or using them one at a time, will fail the challenge. (Note: Some sources mention two swords might work with Tractor Cannon, but the challenge likely strictly requires three simultaneous attacks).
Guaranteed Deepsight Resonance Chest
A special chest awarding a guaranteed Deepsight Resonance weapon once per week per account can be spawned after defeating Crota by activating hidden Hive statues throughout the raid.
- Observe: At the very beginning of the raid (Hellmouth landing zone), look across the chasm to find three pairs of Hive statues. In each pair, one statue (left or right) will be lit. Note the sequence (for example Right, Left, Left).
- Activate First Set (Bridge Encounter Start): Before starting the Bridge encounter, go down the stairs from the rally banner location. Head towards the side (left or right) corresponding to the first lit statue noted earlier. Find an open room (where ads spawn) and interact with the statue inside. A message "A choice echoes into the future..." confirms correct activation. Complete the Bridge encounter.
- Activate Second Set (Bridge Encounter End): After completing the Bridge encounter, stay on the far side platform. Look towards the stairs leading up from the bridge plate. Go to the area on the side (left or right) corresponding to the *second* lit statue. Find the statue at the back of this area and interact with it. Complete the Ir Yut encounter.
- Activate Third Set (Crota Encounter Area): After defeating Ir Yut, jump up to the area above the Crota rally banner location (where the crystal was). Statues are on either side of the small central room. Interact with the statue corresponding to the *third* lit statue. Note: Left/Right here is based on facing the Oversoul (back towards the entrance). Once the third correct statue is activated, the message "A balance is reached. To the victor go the final spoils." appears.
- Collect: After defeating Crota, the guaranteed Deepsight chest will appear alongside the regular final chest.
Rewards
Each encounter has a specific loot pool. Additionally, there are two hidden chests and a guaranteed Deepsight Resonance chest (once per week) that drop Crota's End Raid Mods and random rolls of previously acquired gear. Completing the final encounter grants access to a chest that accepts Spoils of Conquest for additional encounter‑specific rewards or random rolls of acquired gear. Completing weekly challenges on Master difficulty rewards Adept weapons.
All Legendary weapons have Weapon Patterns learnable through Deepsight Resonance extractions for Weapon Shaping. The first weapon purchased from the final chest each week is guaranteed to have Deepsight Resonance. Harmonic Alloys—obtained by dismantling craftable raid Legendary weapons—are required for crafting.
