The Exotic Mission Rotator is a weekly playlist feature in Destiny 2, introduced on August 22, 2023, with Season of the Witch (Season 22). This rotator provides Guardians with recurring access to previously time-gated or vaulted Exotic Missions, offering their respective Exotic weapons (now as craftable versions), weapon catalysts, and associated legacy Legendary weapon and Armor Sets. The primary goals of the rotator are to serve as a permanent home for Seasonal Exotic missions after their initial year and to reintroduce fan-favorite missions from the past.

Access and Mechanics

The active Exotic Mission can be launched from the "Legends" node in the Director. The featured mission rotates weekly at the Weekly Reset (Tuesdays). Each mission in the rotator is available in two difficulties:

  • Normal Mode: Features a standard level of challenge.
  • Legendary Mode: Offers a significantly harder experience with increased enemy density, more Champions, and challenging modifiers. This mode often includes a Power Level disadvantage (e.g., -15 Power delta).

Players may need to own the original expansion or season associated with the mission's rewards to access them.

Reward Structure

The Exotic Mission Rotator has a specific reward structure designed to provide guaranteed progress towards acquiring and upgrading the featured Exotic Weapons and associated gear.

Exotic Weapon Crafting

  • Pattern Acquisition: The first completion of the mission for the week on either Normal or Legendary difficulty will award the Deepsight version of the mission's Exotic weapon. Extracting or dismantling this Deepsight weapon grants its pattern for crafting at The Enclave.
  • Intrinsic Upgrades: Each completion of the Normal or Legendary version of the Exotic mission awards an intrinsic upgrade that can be used when crafting the Exotic weapon (e.g., for Dead Man's Tale, these are different stock options; for Revision Zero, these are the Hunter's Trace upgrades).
  • Catalyst Upgrades: Each completion of the Legendary version of the Exotic mission awards a Catalyst upgrade for the crafted Exotic weapon.

Legendary Gear and Weekly Lockouts

The Normal and Legendary versions of the missions have separate weekly reward lockouts for Legendary gear.

  • Weekly Mission Rewards (per difficulty, once per week per account):
    • One guaranteed Deepsight Legendary weapon that has not had its pattern unlocked.
    • One armor piece that has not already been obtained (based on your current class).
    • If all weapon patterns and armor from the mission's loot pool have been obtained, a random weapon or armor piece from that pool will be awarded instead (some sources state a random world drop if all seasonal items are acquired).
  • Additional Completions: On every completion (Normal or Legendary), you will receive an additional weapon from the mission's Legendary weapon pool. This weapon has a random chance to be a Deepsight weapon but is not guaranteed.

Weekly Challenge

There is a Pinnacle weekly challenge associated with the Exotic Mission Rotator. This challenge rewards will prioritize in the following order:

  1. One guaranteed Deepsight weapon that has not had its pattern unlocked.
  2. If all weapon patterns have all been unlocked, the challenge will award one armor piece that has not been obtained (based on your current class).
  3. If all weapon patterns and armor have been obtained for the in-rotation mission, the challenge will award a random weapon or armor from the mission's pool.

Some sources indicate this challenge requires two completions of the featured Exotic Mission on any difficulty.

Other Rewards

Completing the featured weekly mission also grants bonus progress for the Xenology quest: four points for Normal difficulty and seven points for Legendary difficulty.

Missions in the Rotator

Initially, three missions were included in the rotator. Over time, more missions have been added.

Future Additions

Bungie has stated that Exotic missions launched during Lightfall's Seasons would be added into the rotation with The Final Shape expansion, and they plan on adding additional missions over time. Missions like The Whisper and Zero Hour have also been reprised with their own Exotic crafting systems, though they may exist outside the main weekly rotator as part of the Into the Light content or specific events.

Impact and Player Reception

The Exotic Mission Rotator has been a welcome addition for many players, providing a consistent way to earn previously unavailable Exotic weapons and their catalysts, particularly for those who missed the original seasons. The ability to craft these Exotics allows for greater customization of perks and traits compared to their original random-rolled or fixed-roll versions.

However, some players have expressed concerns about the length of the rotation cycle, as waiting multiple weeks for a specific mission to return can be lengthy, especially when trying to farm patterns for multiple Legendary weapons within that mission's loot pool. The time investment required for some longer missions, like Operation: Seraph's Shield, has also been a point of discussion regarding the efficiency of farming rewards.

Trivia

  • Legacy Triumphs associated with these missions may not always grant progress when completed via the rotator.
  • The introduction of this rotator means that the Exotic weapons Dead Man's Tale, Dead Messenger, and Revision Zero became craftable for the first time.
