Foundation and Early Years (1991-2000)
Bungie was established in May 1991 by Alex Seropian, who later partnered with programmer Jason Jones after publishing Jones's game Minotaur: The Labyrinths of Crete. Originally based in Chicago, Illinois, the company initially focused on Macintosh games and created two successful franchises: Marathon and Myth.
Microsoft Era (2000-2007)
Microsoft acquired Bungie in 2000, and the studio's in-development project became Halo: Combat Evolved, a launch title for the Xbox console. Destiny (2014)
The original Destiny launched worldwide on September 9, 2014, for PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One. It marked Bungie's first new console franchise since Halo and introduced players to a shared-world shooter experience.
Destiny 2 (2017)
Destiny 2 was released in 2017 as a pay-to-play game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows. The game later transitioned to a free-to-play model with the release of New Light in 2019.
Independence from Activision (2019)
In January 2019, Bungie announced its separation from Activision, acquiring the publishing rights to the Destiny franchise. This move allowed Bungie to self-publish Destiny 2 and have complete creative control over the franchise's direction.
