Duality is the fifth dungeon added to Destiny 2. It was released on May 27, 2022, during the Season of the Haunted. The dungeon takes place within the Mindscape of the exiled Cabal Emperor Calus, exploring his trauma and connection to The Witness.
Overview
Duality features a core mechanic involving traveling between two parallel realities: the Material Realm (representing Calus's opulent memories) and the Nightmare Realm (representing his fears and repressed memories). Players transition between these realms by shooting large Bells found throughout the dungeon.
- Shooting a Bell from afar: Transports all players to the Nightmare Realm at their current locations.
- Shooting a Bell while inside its circle: Transports players within the circle back to the Material Realm. Players outside the circle will die.
Encounters in the Nightmare Realm are typically timed, indicated by the Nightmare Collapsing debuff. Killing certain elite enemies (such as Standard Bearers) can extend this timer. Key mechanics often involve defeating specific enemies called Bellkeepers (usually Psions or Incendiors) in the Nightmare Realm to activate the bells for returning to the Material Realm, and collecting Standards (representing Leviathan raid symbols: Sun, War Beast, Chalice, Axe) dropped by Standard Bearers to unlock objectives or initiate damage phases in the Material Realm.
Access
Access to the dungeon requires ownership of The Witch Queen Dungeon Key. Players must acquire the quest A Single Thread from Suraya Hawthorne in the Tower. The dungeon can then be found on the Moon destination map, below the landing zone for the Derelict Leviathan.
The Descent
Guardians begin in an area resembling the old Tribute Hall. After interacting with Eris Morn, they descend into Calus's Mindscape. The initial section serves as an introduction to the Bell mechanic. Players navigate through opulent halls and interconnected passages, shooting distant bells through grates to enter the Nightmare Realm, traversing obstacles, and then returning to the Material Realm by shooting the bells from within their activation circles. Platforming and clearing Cabal enemies are required to progress upwards and deeper into the Mindscape until reaching the first major encounter.
Nightmare of Gahlran, Sorrow Bearer
The first encounter pits Guardians against the Nightmare of Gahlran, Sorrow Bearer, a massive Gladiator Nightmare reminiscent of the boss from the Crown of Sorrow raid. The arena is a long hall with two Bells (one at each end) and four alcoves, each corresponding to one of the four Leviathan Standards (Sun, Chalice, Axe, War Beast). Gahlran is initially immune.
- Enter Nightmare Realm: Shoot either Bell to transport the fireteam to the Nightmare Realm. A Nightmare Collapsing timer begins.
- Collect Standards: Two of the four alcoves will contain War Beasts and powerful Psions known as Standard Bearers. Defeat the two Standard Bearers to make them drop their respective Standards (for example Sun, Axe). Killing a Standard Bearer extends the Nightmare Collapsing timer.
- Kill Bellkeepers: Simultaneously, players must defeat the two Bellkeepers (Psions) guarding the Bell opposite to the one used for entry. This enables the Bell for returning to the Material Realm.
- Return to Material Realm: Gather near the activated Bell and shoot it to return. Players who picked up Standards retain them.
- Deposit Standards: Deposit the collected Standards into their corresponding receptacles in the Material Realm alcoves. This opens the doors behind the receptacles.
- Prepare for Damage Phase: Players who deposited Standards should enter their respective newly opened rooms. The third player remains near a Bell in the main hall.
- Trigger Damage Phase: Shoot the Bell. Players in the side rooms are transported to Nightmare Realm hallways filled with Visions of Gahlran (weaker copies). The player in the main hall must kill the Bellkeepers again.
- Clear Visions: Players in the hallways must defeat all Visions of Gahlran. Once all Visions in both hallways are defeated, the main Nightmare of Gahlran in the central Nightmare Realm arena becomes vulnerable to damage.
- Damage Gahlran: All players converge on Gahlran in the Nightmare Realm and inflict damage. Beware of his attacks and the remaining Nightmare Collapsing timer.
- Escape Nightmare Realm: Before the timer expires, regroup at the activated Bell and shoot it to return to the Material Realm.
- Repeat the entire cycle until the Nightmare of Gahlran is defeated.
Upon Gahlran's defeat, a hole opens in the floor, allowing further descent.
Ever Downward
This section involves platforming and puzzle‑solving. Guardians navigate across moving coffins activated by switches, slide down chutes, and make a significant jump across a chasm.
Eventually, they reach a large chamber containing four large statues of Calus's Gladiators surrounding a central Bell. Some statues may be facing away from the Bell.
- Observe Statues: Note the orientation of the statues in the Material Realm. The goal is to have all four face the central Bell.
- Enter Nightmare Realm: Shoot the central Bell.
- Rotate Statues: In the Nightmare Realm, find the switches on the back of each statue's plinth. Interacting with a switch rotates the corresponding statue in the Material Realm 90 degrees counter‑clockwise. Activate the switches as needed.
- Return and Check: Return to the Material Realm using the Bell. If all statues face the center, the floor beneath the Bell opens, revealing the path to the Vault.
Secret Chest 1: Before leaving the statue room, look towards the entrance wall from the bell. On the upper left, there's a platform accessible by jumping. Inside a small opening on this platform is the first secret chest. It drops gear already acquired from the dungeon.
The Vault
This encounter involves defeating three waves of powerful Cabal mini-bosses (Incendiors or Colossi) that are initially immune. The arena is circular with two Bells (opposite ends) and four stairways leading down into corners, each associated with a Leviathan Standard symbol found on the back of large rectangular blocks at the bottom.
- Identify Symbols: When the encounter starts, two Standard symbols will be projected in the center of the room. An immune Cabal mini-boss spawns.
- Locate Targets & Kill Bellkeepers: Players identify the stairways/rectangles corresponding to the projected symbols. Meanwhile, Bellkeepers in the lower pits beneath the Bells must be killed.
- Enter Nightmare Realm: Have players stand near their target rectangle's location in the Material Realm. Shoot a Bell to enter the Nightmare Realm. A timer starts.
- Acquire Standards: Players whose symbols were projected must ascend the stairs in the Nightmare Realm, defeat the Cabal (including Phalanxes and a Honored Colossus or Legionary) at the top, which spawns a Standard Bearer (with a Solar shield). Kill the Standard Bearer to get the Standard and extend the timer.
- Kill Bellkeepers (Nightmare): Simultaneously, the player(s) not collecting Standards must kill the Bellkeepers guarding the opposite Bell in the Nightmare Realm.
- Return to Material Realm: Regroup at the activated Bell and shoot it to return.
- Deposit Standards: Deposit the two collected Standards into their respective receptacles in the center of the Material Realm.
- Damage Mini-Boss: Depositing the Standards makes the current Cabal mini-boss vulnerable. Defeat it.
- Repeat: Upon defeat, the next immune mini-boss spawns, and two new Standard symbols are projected. Repeat the entire cycle (steps 1-8) two more times, for a total of three mini-bosses defeated.
Completing the third wave unlocks the Vault door and rewards loot.
Secret Chest 2: After the Vault encounter, proceed through the newly opened path. In a room with a purple, viscous floor (The Depths), drop down beside the main platform into the liquid. Look for an alcove containing one of Calus's Memories. Turn around from the Memory to find a small, crouch-height passage. The second secret chest is inside. It drops gear already acquired from the dungeon.
The Depths
A short transitional area involving more bell platforming, leading Guardians deeper into the Mindscape and towards the final confrontation.
Nightmare of Caiatl, Princess-Imperial
The final boss is the Nightmare of Caiatl, Princess-Imperial, representing Calus's shame and fear regarding his daughter. The large arena features three smaller Bells (left, right, center) and a massive Bell at the far end where Caiatl initially spawns. Four balconies overlook the arena, each associated with a Leviathan Standard. Central pillars display the active Standard symbols needed.
Initial Phase (Standard Collection)
- Kill the initial six Bellkeepers (two near each small Bell) in the Material Realm.
- Two Standard symbols appear on the central pillars. Identify the corresponding balconies.
- Players (typically two designated for Standards, one or two for Bellkeepers) position themselves accordingly. Standard collectors might stand on the target balconies before teleporting.
- Shoot a small Bell -> Enter Nightmare Realm. Timer begins.
- Standard collectors defeat the Standard Bearers (snipers) on their balconies and grab the Standards. **Important:** Killing incorrect Standard Bearers penalizes the timer.
- Bellkeeper player(s) defeat the four Bellkeepers guarding the other two inactive Bells in the Nightmare Realm.
- Regroup at the activated Bell and return to the Material Realm.
- Deposit the two Standards. Two new symbols appear.
- Repeat the process (killing Material Realm Bellkeepers, entering Nightmare, collecting the next two Standards, killing Nightmare Bellkeepers, returning, depositing) until all four Standards are placed.
Trigger Damage Phase
Once four Standards are deposited, shoot one of the large, glowing red gems/chains behind any Standard receptacle. This rings the giant Bell at the end of the arena, teleporting the fireteam and Caiatl into the Nightmare Realm for the DPS phase. The Nightmare Collapsing timer is suspended during this phase.
Damage Phase (Bell Stuns)
- Caiatl will begin running towards one of the three small Bells.
- Identify her target Bell.
- Quickly defeat the two Bellkeepers guarding *that specific Bell*.
- Position the fireteam within the Bell's circle.
- Shoot the Bell *just before* Caiatl reaches it. Getting close to Caiatl can make her perform a stomp attack, slightly delaying her.
- A successful stun damages Caiatl slightly, interrupts her escape attempt, and grants the Waking Resonance buff (significant damage increase) to players inside the circle for about 10 seconds.
- Inflict heavy damage on the stunned Caiatl while the buff is active.
- Caiatl will then run towards another Bell. Repeat the process: kill the two Bellkeepers at the new target Bell, intercept her by ringing the Bell before she arrives, and deal damage during the Waking Resonance buff.
- Attempt to stun her at all three Bells.
End of Phase
After the third Bell stun (or if a stun is missed and Caiatl reaches a Bell), she will escape through the giant Bell, teleporting the fireteam back to the Material Realm.
Repeat the entire encounter cycle (Standard Collection Phase -> Trigger -> Damage Phase) until the Nightmare of Caiatl is defeated.
Defeating the Nightmare of Caiatl completes the dungeon, and Eris Morn pulls the Guardians out of the Mindscape.
Rewards
Each major encounter (Gahlran, Vault, Caiatl) drops weapons or armor upon completion. The final encounter drops two items. Drops are farmable when Duality is the featured weekly dungeon. Master difficulty drops Artifice Armor.
- The re-issued Season of Opulence weapons,
The Epicurean and
Fixed Odds, have Weapon Patterns that can be learned through Deepsight Resonance extractions, allowing them to be crafted. The other dungeon weapons do not have Weapon Patterns.
Secret Chests
There are two secret chests in the Duality dungeon. They reward one piece of gear (weapon or armor) that the player has previously obtained from the dungeon encounters.
- Chest 1 (Statue Room): Located after the Nightmare of Gahlran encounter, in the room with the four Gladiator statues. From the central Bell, face the direction you entered from. Jump up to the platform on the upper left wall. Enter the small opening to find the chest.
- Chest 2 (The Depths): Located after the Vault encounter, in the room with the viscous purple floor. Drop down near the main platform, find the Calus Memory collectible, turn around, and crouch through the small passage behind it.
