Description Drown in the Deep, or rise from it.

Ghosts of the Deep is the seventh dungeon added to Destiny 2. It was released during the Season of the Deep. Beneath the Arcology in the methane oceans of Titan, Guardians must delve into its furthest depths to stop the Lucent Brood and their efforts to resurrect the fallen Taken King, whose corpse drifted from the rings of Saturn and lies at the bottom of the sea.

Overview

Players will venture into the depths of Titan's methane ocean to investigate Lucent Hive activity within the abandoned New Pacific Arcology. The dungeon begins with breaking a Hive ritual before descending into the seas to confront the Lucent Hive and their efforts to resurrect Oryx, the Taken King. Ghosts of the Deep has a Master difficulty, which requires a higher power level and adds additional modifiers such as Champion enemies. Armor dropped on this difficulty will have the Artifice Armor Intrinsic perk.

Hive Ritual

The dungeon begins in a forested area outside the New Pacific Arcology. Players will move forward to encounter a door blocked by a Hive ritual circle. To progress, four thrall statues need to be imbued with "Vestige of Light" through four cycles of the same process:

  1. Kill the Soulfire Binder: Defeat the Ogre that wanders near the ritual site.
  2. Follow the Trail: The ground will glow green, indicating a path to a group of Hive including Wizards. Kill them to reveal another glowing path.
  3. Defeat the Lightbearer: The third group will include a Lightbearer Hive. When its Ghost is crushed, it grants the "Vestige of Light" to the player who performed the Finisher. Note the Hive rune floating above the area where it was killed.
  4. Deposit the Vestige: Return to the ritual circle where a Veilweaver Wizard will now be present. Defeat it to reveal a Deepsight illusion showing runes on each Thrall Statue. The player with the Vestige must deposit it at the statue with the same rune as where it was picked up.

After successfully completing four cycles, the door will open, allowing access to the Arcology.

Deep Methane

After entering the building, players will descend into the underwater section of the dungeon. This traversal section requires careful management of the pressure gauge, which builds up while underwater. Players must navigate through the structure, using oxygen bubbles to prevent being crushed by the pressure. At two points, turbines will push players upward into aerated rooms, allowing progress to the next underwater section. As players continue deeper, Hive architecture becomes more prominent. Eventually, players will reach the bottom where they'll encounter Ecthar, a Void-shielded Knight who attempts to attack but doesn't deal direct damage - instead, his attacks drain the player's pressure gauge significantly. Just past Ecthar is an upward current leading to the first boss fight arena.

Ecthar, the Shield of Savathûn

The first boss encounter takes place in a room with a fountain at the center. The fight begins when players kill the Acolytes gathered near the entrance. The mechanics for this encounter are:

  1. Kill Blistered Knights: Defeat the three special Knights to spawn a Keeper of the Deep Ogre.
  2. Defeat the Ogre and Reveal Symbols: Killing the Ogre drops a Deepsight illusion which reveals three symbols on the walls near the ceiling.
  3. Underwater Rune Activation: Players must dive underwater to find and touch the three matching rune symbols. Ecthar will pursue players underwater, attempting to drain their pressure gauge. Touching the correct symbols spawns Lightbearer Wizards above water.
  4. Collect Vestiges of Light: Kill the Lightbearers and their Ghosts to obtain Vestiges of Light, which must be deposited in the three thrall statues surrounding the upper area.
  5. Damage Phase: Once all three statues are charged, a Wellkeeper Knight appears. Defeat it to create a pool that allows players to damage Ecthar's shield. Once the shield is down, players can deal damage to Ecthar from anywhere in the room.

If Ecthar isn't defeated in one damage phase, his shield will regenerate, and the process must be repeated. When defeated, his Ghost must be crushed or he will respawn with a portion of his health. Defeating him permanently unlocks an underwater door allowing players to proceed.

Secret Chest #1

The first Secret Chest can be found during the underwater section after defeating Ecthar. As players descend, they will eventually reach a point with two entrances to an area - a top entrance and a bottom entrance. The secret chest is located near the top entrance. Players emerging from the bottom entrance will need to fight Hive enemies before looping back around to find the chest above where they emerged.

Šimmumah ur-Nokru, Lucent Necromancer

After traversing more underwater sections and a series of platforms with enemies, players will eventually reach a large, open cove containing the partially buried corpse of Oryx, the Taken King. Above him hovers Šimmumah ur-Nokru and an unclaimed Ghost. Crushing this Ghost begins the final encounter. The mechanics for this fight are:

  1. Reveal Connected Locations: After killing initial enemies, a Deepsight illusion appears that reveals three orbs floating over different parts of Oryx's body (these can include the Head, Heart, Left Hand, Right Hand, Left Foot, or Right Knee).
  2. Defeat Vorlog at Marked Locations: Vorlog, Risen in Heresy will spawn and chase players. When killed while a player is standing under one of the revealed orbs, Šimmumah will be attracted to that location, causing a ring and Taken symbol to appear in the air.
  3. Align Symbols: Players must position themselves to line up the ring and symbol from their perspective, revealing a rune when aligned correctly. This must be done for all three orbs.
  4. Collect Vestiges of Light: Three methane pockets around the arena (left, right, and under Oryx's head) each conceal a room containing a different Lightbearer: a Knight, an Acolyte, and a Wizard. Defeating them and crushing their Ghosts grants different Vestiges of Light (Vestige of a Knight, Vestige of an Acolyte, and Vestige of a Wizard).
  5. Deposit Vestiges: Players must return to the main arena, activate Deepsight, and deposit each Vestige at the body part with the corresponding rune symbol.
  6. Damage Phase: Once all three parts are imbued, Šimmumah's shield can be damaged. Players must stand in the green rings that form at one of the imbued locations to damage her shield. When the shield breaks, Šimmumah becomes vulnerable and can be damaged from anywhere.

When Šimmumah's health reaches zero, players must crush her Ghost to complete the dungeon.

Secret Chest #2

The second secret chest is found shortly before the final boss encounter. After defeating Ecthar and progressing through the underwater section, players will reach an area with platforms where they must hop across while killing Shriekers. An Ogre will spawn and walk toward a gazebo-like structure. After killing the Ogre, players can jump onto the gazebo to find the second secret chest.

Calcified Fragments

Throughout the dungeon, players can find twelve Calcified Fragments recorded by Xivu Arath, God of War. These fragments provide narrative insights into Xivu Arath's life, her feelings about Oryx's death, and her sister Savathûn's betrayal. Collecting these fragments contributes to the dungeon's Lore and Triumphs.

The Navigator Catalyst

Players who have obtained The Navigator Exotic Trace Rifle can find a hidden quest within the dungeon to acquire its Catalyst. The process involves:

  1. Finding a pile of dead Ghosts in a secluded part of the Arcology.
  2. Claiming a Vestige of Light from the pile and imbuing a nearby hidden statue.
  3. Defeating Thul-Ar, Acolyte of Nokris and Runebound Visages that appear.
  4. Pursuing Thul-Ar deeper into the Arcology as it retreats after taking damage.
  5. Repeating this process two more times in different locations until finally defeating Thul-Ar and its Ghost.

Rewards

Each encounter has a specific loot pool. New items can be obtained once per week, per class, but encounters can be looted for rerolls of already unlocked gear an unlimited amount of times when the dungeon is the weekly featured dungeon. Additionally, the two hidden chests drop random rolls of gear the player has already acquired. Encounters on Master difficulty drop armor with the Artifice Armor perk.
