General Information
Overview
Engrams are unidentified loot items randomly dropped by enemies or awarded upon completion of various activities in Destiny 2. Players can bring Engrams to Master Rahool or Tyra Karn to have them deciphered and reveal their contents. With a few exceptions, Engrams adhere to the following rules when being decrypted:
Decrypting Algorithm
- Engrams will attempt to decrypt with a base Attack/Defense value proportional to the player's highest possible Base Power Level while it is at or above the relevant soft cap (265 for base game only, 300 with Curse of Osiris ownership, or 340 with Warmind ownership).
- A different set of rules, not given here, applies while the player is not yet at the soft cap.
- Rare engrams will decrypt with a base Attack/Defense value that is 7 to 5 points lower than the player's BPL.
- Legendary engrams will decrypt with a base Attack/Defense value that is 5 points lower than the player's BPL.
- Exotic engrams will decrypt with a base Attack/Defense value that is equivalent to the player's BPL.
- Exotic Engrams can drop upon completion of any activity or when ranking up a Faction.

Prime Engrams | Engrams that can be decrypted into Powerful equipment. Prime engrams are similar to Luminous engrams, meaning that it is necessary to decode them at a cryptarch. This is one of the ways to pass the 500 power item drop cap. |
