Dual Destiny is a secret Exotic Mission discovered and accessible on June 7, 2024,[1] following the world's first completion of the Salvation's Edge raid, during Episode: Echoes alongside The Final Shape expansion for Destiny 2.[2] [3] Taking place in The Refraction within The Pale Heart,[4] [5] it is the primary source for the randomly rolled Exotic Class Items: Relativism (Hunter), Stoicism (Titan), and Solipsism (Warlock).[6] [2] The mission is unique in that it requires a Fireteam of exactly two players and has no matchmaking, emphasizing coordination and communication between Light and Darkness.[6] [4] [7] [8] [9]

Unlocking the Mission

Accessing Dual Destiny involves a hidden multi-step process within The Pale Heart destination, which needs only be completed once per account to permanently unlock the mission node on the Director map.[4] [10] [11] While the unlock steps can be done solo, progressing through Overthrow tiers is faster with a fireteam.[11] Some reports suggest completing Micah-10's quests "Alone in the Dark" and "Lost in the Light" may be a prerequisite.[7] [12] [13] Players must also have completed The Final Shape campaign.[9] [14]

The steps are as follows:

Complete Overthrow Tier 3 & Defeat Secret-Keepers: Players must fully complete the Overthrow activity (reaching Tier 3 and defeating the final boss) in each of the three main Pale Heart regions: The Landing, The Blooming, and The Impasse.[6] [4] [5] [10] [15]

    • After defeating the Overthrow boss in a region, wait briefly for a message: "A Secret-Keeper of the Witch Queen is near...".[6] [5] [7] [10] [16] This signals the spawn of a special Lucent Brood Hive Wizard nearby.[7] [17] [11]
    • Locate and defeat this Secret-Keeper Wizard. Their specific locations vary slightly but are generally found in known caves or side areas within each region (e.g., southeast cave near Forgotten Deep Lost Sector in The Landing, northeast cave/maze area in The Blooming, southwest area near Broken Deep Lost Sector in The Impasse).[6] [10] [3] [11] [18] [19] Crushing its Ghost confirms the kill.[2] [18]
    • Repeat this process for all three regions (The Landing, The Blooming, The Impasse).[6] [5] [3] [20] The order may or may not matter, though completing them from left to right (Landing -> Blooming -> Impasse) is commonly suggested.[12]

Locate the Beam, Obtain Buff, and Collect Orbs: After defeating all three Secret-Keepers, a green or gold beam of light will appear in the sky originating from The Refraction area (between The Landing and The Blooming).[4] [10] [21] [20] [22] Travel towards the beam's origin point.[4] [10]

    • Enter the cave illuminated by the beam and interact with the statue/relic to receive the Savathûn's Envoy buff, which lasts seven minutes.[22] [19]
    • Follow the two quest markers that appear on the HUD.[22]
    • At each location, defeat enemies until a powerful Subjugator boss spawns (these are not Expector Selin or Yemiq).[4] [10] [22] [19] Defeat them.
    • Each Subjugator drops an orb: one of Refracted Light and one of Sublimated Darkness.[4] [2] [23] [22]

Dunk the Orbs: Each player must pick up one orb (one Light, one Darkness) and carry them back into the starting cave where Savathûn, the Witch Queen may offer some dialogue.[4] [2] [21]

    • Inside, locate the pools or plates of Light and Darkness energy and dunk the corresponding orbs before the Savathûn's Envoy buff expires.[4] [2] [22]

Mission Unlocked: Successfully dunking both orbs spawns the mission launch flag in the cave and adds the Dual Destiny node permanently to The Pale Heart map on the Director for all characters on the account.[4] [7] [10] [2]

Mission Requirements

Before launching the mission from the Director, players must ensure:

Exactly Two Players: The fireteam must consist of precisely two Guardians. The mission cannot be launched solo or with three players.[6] [7] [24] [25]

Light and Darkness Subclasses: One player must have a Light Subclass equipped (Solar, Arc, or Void), and the other must have a Darkness Subclass equipped (Stasis or Strand).[6] [4] [7] [25] If both players use Prismatic, the game will assign Light/Dark alignment.[6] [7]

Recommended Power: The recommended Power Level at launch was 1995.[23] [26] While the Fireteam Power system helps mitigate lower levels,[27] enemies will be challenging for significantly under-leveled players.

Locked Loadouts: Equipment and subclasses are locked upon mission start, so players should finalize their builds beforehand.[7] [9]

Gameplay

Dual Destiny is a timed mission requiring constant cooperation and communication between the two players.[6] [4] [9] The initial timer is relatively short (around 6 minutes[28]), but completing major puzzle sections extends it significantly (e.g., by 10 minutes[28] [29]). Running out of time at certain checkpoints will result in being returned to orbit.[4] [30] Voice communication is highly recommended due to the complex callouts required for puzzle mechanics.[6] [17] [18]

Core Mechanics

Light and Darkness Alignment: Upon starting, each player is assigned either "Light Aligned" or "Darkness Aligned", indicated by a buff.[7] [3] [9] This dictates which plates players must stand on, which specific shielded enemies or objects they can interact with/damage, and their roles in certain puzzles.[5] [7] [9]

Synchronization Plates: Pairs of Light and Darkness plates appear throughout the mission. Both players must stand on their corresponding plate simultaneously to progress, often opening doors, activating platforms, or starting encounters.[5] [7]

Symbol Puzzles: Encounters involve matching symbols, visually similar to those seen in the Vow of the Disciple Raid.[31] [32] Typically, killing an aligned enemy (like a Taken Knight or Centurion) drops a Mote of Light or Mote of Darkness.[7] [3] [9] Picking up the mote allows one player to see a sequence of symbols (e.g., on a central pillar or plinth), while the other player sees multiple symbols floating or on objects in the area and must shoot the correct ones in the order called out by their partner.[5] [7] [33] [34] Feedback text indicates success ("Paracausal energy gathers…", "clings…", "tears through…") or failure ("The paracausal energy dissipates…").[34] Roles (reader vs. shooter) often swap between puzzle phases.[7] [33] [34]

Clock/Crux Puzzles ("Pillars Puzzle"): Later encounters introduce mechanics resembling clock faces or arrangements of Darkness pillars/cruxes.[7] [11] [33] [9] Players might see different sets of active/inactive cruxes or lasers on their respective displays. After fulfilling a condition (like killing Tormentors or minibosses to gain a buff like Harmonic Sundering[9] [35]), they must communicate to identify the cruxes/pillars/positions they have in common (e.g., the three pillars still tethered for both players[35] or the three shared clock positions[9]) and shoot them, sometimes simultaneously.[7] [11] [33] [21] [35] Successfully completing these puzzle phases often results in messages like "Light and Darkness surge, destabilizing an obelisk"[35] or lowers barriers.[34]

Timed Sections: Most major encounters and puzzles are timed, requiring efficient execution.[6] [4] [5] [9] Failing to complete objectives before the timer expires results in a wipe to orbit or restarting the encounter.[4] [30] Killing specific enemies like Lightbearer Wizards can sometimes extend the timer.[2] [29]

Encounters

The mission progresses through several distinct phases involving platforming, combat, and puzzle-solving:

  1. Infiltration / Entrance: Navigate the initial crystal cavern and Taken-filled areas, using Light/Dark Synchronization Plates to open pathways.[5] [7] [9]
  2. First Puzzle Encounter (Glyph Chambers / Refraction Cavern): Defeat waves of enemies and aligned minibosses (Taken Knights/Centurions) to collect motes and trigger the symbol reading/shooting mechanic across multiple rooms/phases. Roles typically swap between rooms (e.g., Light reads 2, Dark shoots; Dark reads 3, Light shoots; Light reads 4, Dark shoots).[7] [3] [33] [34]
  3. First Jumping Puzzle: A platforming section requiring players to stand on their respective Light/Dark plates to activate platforms. Players may need to split up based on alignment, and plate positions can switch sides, requiring coordinated activation.[5]
  4. Second Puzzle Encounter (Clock Face / Intrusion): Engage enemies, including Tormentors. Killing a Tormentor may grant the Harmonic Sundering buff needed to shoot.[9] Use communication to identify and shoot shared/matching cruxes or clock positions on interfaces to lower barriers or progress. This may need to be repeated multiple times.[7] [11] [33] [9] [34]
  5. Second Jumping Puzzle: A generally simpler jumping puzzle involving plates that activate launch rings or platforms to traverse between floating islands. Players may separate briefly before regrouping to defeat more enemies (like Tormentors) and reach the final arena.[5]
  6. Final Boss Encounter (Expectors Selin and Yemiq): A multi-stage fight against two Subjugator bosses, Expector Selin (Light-Scythe) and Expector Yemiq (Dark-Scythe).[5] [2] [36]
    • Initially, damage one Subjugator until it becomes immune and shields up, spawning aligned minibosses (e.g., Servile Wizards). Players must kill the miniboss corresponding to their alignment (Light player kills Light wizard, Dark player kills Dark wizard).[5] [34]
    • This may trigger a symbol reading/shooting phase (e.g., Light player sees 3 symbols, communicates to Dark player who shoots matching splinters).[34]
    • After completing the mechanic and another damage phase, the first boss might retreat, and the second Subjugator appears. Repeat the process, potentially swapping roles for the symbol/puzzle mechanics (e.g., Dark player reads 6 symbols, Light player shoots).[33] [34]
    • The final phase involves both bosses being active, often behind shields. Players may need to defeat aligned Wizards again, then use clock/crux mechanics, identifying and shooting commonly lit cruxes simultaneously across multiple sets to finally drop the bosses' shields for the final damage phase.[2] [33] [21] [34] Defeat both Subjugators to complete the combat portion of the mission.[2]

Final Choice

After defeating the bosses, players are teleported into separate shielded prisons or cages and presented with a choice by a statue or interface:[9] [37]

Prepare for Battle: Initiates PvP combat between the two players within the arena. The fight continues until one player eliminates the other.[9] [37]

Choose Peace: Skips the dueling portion; both players yield.[9] [37]

This choice does not affect the Exotic Class Item reward.[9] [31] However, each choice provides unique dialogue from Savathûn, the Witch Queen, adding narrative flavor related to the themes of conflict and cooperation.[9] [31] [37] Players respawn after the choice/duel concludes and can claim their rewards.[37]

Rewards

Completing Dual Destiny for the first time on a specific character class guarantees a drop of that class's specific Exotic Class Item:[6] [4] [7] [9]

Hunter: Relativism

Titan: Stoicism

Warlock: Solipsism

These class items roll with two Exotic armor perks selected randomly from a curated pool for that class, potentially including perks usually restricted to specific Exotic armor pieces.[6] [4] [38] Most perk combinations require the Prismatic subclass to be equipped to function.[6]

Farming Exotic Class Items

After the initial guaranteed drop for a class, Exotic Class Items can be farmed through several methods:

Mission Recompletion: Completing the Dual Destiny mission again guarantees one drop per character class per week, with additional non-guaranteed drops possible on subsequent runs within the same week.[6] [39]

Pale Heart Chests: Exotic Class Items have a rare chance to drop from any chest opened within The Pale Heart destination.[6] [4] [7] [39] [38]

Overthrow Activity Chests: Chests awarded during the Overthrow activity in The Pale Heart have an increased drop chance compared to regional chests, particularly higher-tier reward chests. This chance increases with each Overthrow completion where an Exotic Class Item does not drop, resetting once one is obtained.[39] [40]

Attunement: Completing Dual Destiny unlocks the ability to attune Exotic Class Item drops at the Ghost vendor in the Tower's old Courtyard. This allows players to focus the random perk rolls, increasing the chance of obtaining specific desired Exotic perks on subsequent drops.[10] [39] [40]

Special Events (Temporary): Occasionally, Exotic Class Items might be obtainable through limited-time events (like Festival of the Lost 2024). However, completing the Dual Destiny mission is still required to unlock the perk attunement feature.[39] [40]

Additional possible rewards from completing the mission include Enhancement Prisms, Ascendant Shards, high-stat armor, Pale Heart Engrams, and Pale Heart Deepsight Resonant Weapons.[5]

Strategy Tips

General Advice

Communication is Key: Constant, clear communication via voice chat is almost essential for the symbol and clock/crux puzzles.[6] [17] [25]

Coordinate Roles: Decide beforehand or early on who will handle specific mechanics if possible, though roles often swap.

Loadout Synergy: Choose weapons and subclasses that complement each other and can handle diverse ranges and enemy types (Majors, Ultras, shielded enemies, snipers).[25] Save Super abilities and Heavy ammunition for boss phases or difficult encounters.[25]

Prioritize Threats: Focus down high-value targets like shielded enemies that require alignment, snipers, and powerful enemies like Tormentors quickly.

Stay Alive: Wipes cost significant time due to the timer. Prioritize survival, especially during platforming and intense combat phases.

Puzzle Communication

Establish Callouts: For symbol puzzles, use clear, agreed-upon names for the Vow of the Disciple symbols.[41]

Numbering Systems: For clock face and pillar/crux puzzles, number the positions consistently (e.g., 1-9 or 1-12 like a clock). Clearly communicate which numbers each player sees as active/lit/tethered.[35] [25]

Confirm Shared Elements: Before shooting cruxes/pillars, explicitly confirm the commonly seen elements. The player with the buff (e.g., Harmonic Sundering) should only shoot the confirmed shared targets.[35]

Secrets

Feathers of Light: Six hidden Feathers of Light collectibles required for a Triumph can be found within the Dual Destiny mission instance. They are located in various hidden spots throughout the patrol space accessible during the mission's start and within the jumping puzzle sections.[7] [42]

Lore

Dual Destiny delves into the core themes of The Final Shape expansion, focusing on the balance and interaction between Light and Darkness. Set within the Traveler's The Pale Heart, the mission uses cooperative mechanics requiring Guardians aligned with opposing paracausal forces to work together, symbolizing the necessity of integrating both powers.[43] The presence and dialogue of Savathûn, the Witch Queen underscore themes of trickery, hidden paths, and the ambiguous nature of power.[4] [24] [43] The final choice presented to the players further emphasizes the philosophical conflict between aggression ("Prepare for Battle") and understanding ("Choose Peace"), reflecting the overarching narrative of finding a way forward beyond the eternal conflict.[9] [43]

Trivia

Dual Destiny is the first mission in Destiny 2 to award Exotic Class Items.[9]

It is the first mission to require exactly two players; previous secret missions like The Whisper and Zero Hour allowed up to three players and could often be completed solo by skilled players.[44]

The mission cannot be launched solo; it requires exactly two players in the fireteam.[7] [24] Attempting to launch solo results in an error message.

Despite the strict two-player requirement, player Esoterickk demonstrated it was possible to complete the mission "solo" by simultaneously controlling two separate accounts/characters.[45] [46]

The mandatory two-player nature, lack of matchmaking, and the tying of highly anticipated Exotic Class Items to this mission generated significant community discussion and some controversy, particularly regarding accessibility for solo players or those finding it difficult to team up.[4] [8] [30] [47] [20]

The puzzle symbols used are directly taken from the Vow of the Disciple Raid, reinforcing the connection to The Witness and the Darkness.[31] [44]

Patch History

Hotfix 7.3.5 (2024-06-18): Fixed an issue where killing Expector Selin or Expector Yemiq too quickly could soft-lock the clock puzzle mechanic during the final boss encounter.[48]

Hotfix 7.3.6 (2024-07-02): Reduced Tormentor health by 15% on Normal difficulty.[49]
