Story
Following the Lightfall campaign and the sacrifice of the Cloud Strider Rohan, Nimbus discovered Rohan had been researching the Vex, specifically the Sol Divisive faction, and their connection to The Veil.[5] Seeking to continue Rohan's work and understand the Vex's attempts to replicate The Veil, Nimbus tasks the Guardian with retrieving the memory core of a Conceptual Mind located deep within the Black Garden. Using Rohan's passkey, the Guardian gains entry.[6][5]
Inside the Garden, Osiris provides guidance via comms, warning of the location's dangerous influence, while Ghost comments on the surroundings. The Guardian battles through Vex forces who seem prepared for their arrival.[5] Partway through, the Guardian finds Nimbus contemplating Rohan's personal Deterministic Chaos Machine Gun, left behind on a previous expedition. After a moment reflecting on Rohan's legacy and their own duty to protect Neomuna, Nimbus entrusts the weapon to the Guardian before returning to the city.[5][7] The Guardian then proceeds alone, using the newly acquired weapon against further Vex and Taken forces vying for control of the Conceptual Mind, eventually confronting and defeating the Vex Mind to secure its core.[8]
Detailed Walkthrough
Access & Requirements
- Quest Giver: Nimbus at Strider’s Gate (after the Lightfall campaign).[9]
- Fireteam Size: 1-3 Guardians; matchmaking is **not** enabled.[10]
- Recommended Power: 1770 at launch, scaling with the current seasonal caps.[4]
- Modifiers: Standard Darkness Zone respawn restrictions apply.
Mission Stages
| # | Phase title | Key tasks | Enemies Noted |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Find Conceptual Mind | Traverse the verdant canyon entrance. Defeat waves of Vex (Goblins, Hobgoblins, Minotaurs, Harpies). Destroy three shielded Vex cubes by defeating nearby Hydras to drop their shields, then destroying the cubes. Proceed through the lowered barrier.[1][6] | Vex: Hydras, Cyclops, Minotaurs |
| 2 | Pass Security Protocol | Navigate the Undergrowth cave system via platforming. Defeat a Minotaur carrying an Arc Cranium. Use the Cranium to shoot reflective diamond plates, bouncing the laser beam to destroy two shielded Vex nodes, opening the next door.[1][7] | Vex: Minotaurs, Goblins |
| 3 | Destroy Taken Blights | Enter an area corrupted by Taken. Platform across precarious tree branches and structures. Locate and destroy three Taken Blights by entering their damaging radius and shooting the core. Beware Taken Ogre eye beams that can push Guardians off platforms.[1][11][6] | Taken: Ogres, Wizards, Psions, Vandals |
| 4 | Speak to Nimbus | Progress to the "Embrace" plateau. Find Nimbus near Rohan's weapon. After dialogue, collect Deterministic Chaos. Numerous Heavy Ammo crates spawn from this point forward.[1][7][3] | Minor Vex/Taken waves |
| 5 | Defeat Conceptual Mind | Enter the final arena, the location where the Black Heart was once fought.[12] Confront the Conceptual Mind, Sol Inherent, a colossal Hydra. The fight has multiple phases: * Phase 1 & 2: Damage the boss until approximately one-third health is depleted. It will retreat behind a Vex barrier. Destroy exposed floating Vex cubes using Deterministic Chaos's ricochet shots off reflective plates to lower the barrier.[8][6] Repeat for the second phase. * Phase 3: The boss retreats a final time. Two reinforced cubes appear behind it, requiring ricochet shots to destroy. Once the shields are down, defeat the Conceptual Mind.[13][6] |
Boss: Conceptual Mind, Sol Inherent Adds: Vex Goblins, Hobgoblins; Taken Thrall, Knights |
Upon defeating the Conceptual Mind, a brief cutscene plays showing the Guardian securing the memory core. The mission concludes. Return to Nimbus in Neomuna to progress to Step 12 of the Unfinished Business quest.[4]
Rewards
- Deterministic Chaos: Guaranteed drop upon first completion of this mission step.[2] This Exotic Void Machine Gun features two intrinsic perks:[14]
- Quest Progression: Allows advancement to the final steps of the Unfinished Business Exotic quest.[6]
- Triumph: Associated Triumphs for completing the mission and the questline.
- Future Potential: May award Pinnacle-tier gear if added to the weekly Exotic Mission Rotator in the future.[10]
Tips and Strategies
- Utilize Strand: The Strand subclass, particularly the grapple melee, significantly aids in navigating the extensive platforming sections in the Black Garden.[15]
- Leverage Deterministic Chaos: Once acquired, use the weapon liberally. Heavy ammo is plentiful in the latter half of the mission. Its perks are effective against the dense groups of enemies and the final boss.[16]
- Prioritize Key Enemies: In the initial Vex cube section, focus on eliminating the Hydras quickly to drop the cube shields.[17] In the Taken Blight section, prioritize eliminating Ogres and Wizards to make platforming safer.[6]
- Master the Ricochet: Practice using Deterministic Chaos's shots bouncing off the reflective plates during the final boss fight. Hitting the shielded cubes quickly is key to minimizing downtime between damage phases.[18]
- Stay Mobile: Especially during the Taken encounters and the final boss fight, constant movement helps avoid overwhelming damage from numerous adds and boss attacks.
Trivia
- The mission path involves traversing sections of the Garden of Salvation raid environment, but largely in reverse order, offering a unique perspective.[4][3]
- The final boss arena for the Conceptual Mind is built on the same platform where Guardians destroyed the Black Heart in the original Destiny campaign's climax.[12]
- The mission heavily features the relationship between Nimbus and their deceased mentor Rohan, culminating in Nimbus passing Rohan's weapon to the Guardian.[5]
- The mission's name, "What Remains," can be interpreted multiple ways: referring to the remnants of Rohan's research, the remaining Vex project related to the Veil, or what remains for Nimbus emotionally after Rohan's sacrifice.[5]
- The Conceptual Mind, Sol Inherent belongs to the Sol Divisive Vex faction, known for their worship of the Darkness.[19]
- Shortly after Lightfall's launch, a hotfix was deployed (around March 10, 2023) to address bugs preventing quest progression after completing this mission for some players.[20]
