Taken Ogres are Taken variants of Hive Ogres that have been corrupted by the power of The Darkness. These massive creatures serve whoever commands the Taken forces and are known for their devastating Arc eye beams that create extreme knockback effects.

Overview

Taken Ogres are former Hive Ogres that have undergone the process of being "Taken" - pulled from reality into another dimension, corrupted by Darkness, and returned with new paracausal abilities. Like all Taken, they display the characteristic black and white appearance with glowing white energy coursing through their bodies.

Gameplay

Abilities

Taken Ogres possess several dangerous abilities that differentiate them from their Hive counterparts:

Rotten Surge: Their primary attack is an Arc damage eye beam that replaces the standard Ogre's rapid-fire Void Eye Blast. This attack:

  • Fires in bursts that increase in rate of fire the longer the Ogre continues shooting
  • Causes extreme knockback that intensifies over time
  • Can launch Guardians hundreds of meters into the air after sustained fire
  • Applies continuous pressure rather than focusing on direct damage

Ground Slam: When enemies approach too close, Taken Ogres will perform a devastating ground slam attack.

Dire Ogre Variant: Special variants called "Dire Ogres" possess additional abilities:

  • Can spew streams of fire similar to Taken Knights
  • Capable of charging at players

Combat Strategy

Fighting Taken Ogres requires specific tactics:

  • Maintain Distance: The knockback effect makes close-range combat extremely dangerous
  • Use Cover: Essential when facing multiple Taken Ogres, as their combined knockback can be lethal
  • Stagger Effects: Similar to Vex Wyverns, staggers are the safest method of defeating them
  • Positioning: Avoid fighting near edges or hazards where knockback could prove fatal

Lore

Taken Ogres began as standard Hive Ogres - creatures born from corrupted Thrall through depraved Wizard rituals. The process of becoming an Ogre involves:

  1. Starting as "Unborn" - Thralls conditioned to hate the Light
  2. Undergoing a "rebirthing" ritual conducted by Wizards
  3. Emerging as "Reborn" with enhanced strength, intelligence, and arcane abilities

When Taken, these already formidable creatures gain the will of their new master and additional paracausal powers. The distinct black and white coloration comes from the Darkness itself, marking them as beings existing partially outside normal reality.

History

Taken Ogres were first encountered by Guardians during Oryx's campaign of vengeance for his son Crota. Since then, they have served various masters of the Taken forces, including:

  • Taken Ogre: Standard variant
  • Dire Ogre: Enhanced variant with additional fire and charge abilities
  • Unstoppable Taken Ogre: Champion variant requiring specific mods to stagger
