The Last City, also referred to as The City, is the final bastion of humanity on Earth in the Destiny universe. Built beneath The Traveler after its arrival, it serves as the last major population center for humanity and the primary base of operations for Guardians.

Overview

The Last City represents humanity's final stronghold following The Collapse, a cataclysmic event that nearly destroyed human civilization. Protected by massive walls and defended by Guardians operating from The Tower, the City has survived numerous attacks throughout its history. The Traveler hovers directly above the City, providing both symbolic hope and practical protection to its inhabitants.

Location

While the exact location of the Last City was intentionally kept mysterious for years, evidence strongly suggests it is located in South America, specifically in the region of Santiago, Chile:

Evidence for South American Location

  • The Season of the Seraph Exotic Mission "Operation: Seraph's Shield" definitively places the City where Santiago, Chile would be
  • The Colony exotic grenade launcher's lore mentions a terciopelo snake (Bothrops asper) near the City, a species native to the region between southern Mexico and northern South America
  • Suraya Hawthorne mentions flying "across the pond" from the EDZ and crossing the "Panama Ravine" as a child to reach the City
  • Time zone differences between The Farm (European Dead Zone) and the City support this geographic separation

History

Following the Collapse, survivors gathered beneath the dormant Traveler, believing it offered the best chance for protection. The early City was built from the remnants of the Golden Age, with refugees and Guardians working together to establish defenses.
