Experience is the measurement of a player's progression through the game.

Overview

As of Shadowkeep season icon.png Shadowkeep, character levels were removed from the game, and the experience system is now tied to season ranks. Experience is shared across all three characters on an account and is used to unlock Season Pass rewards, Seasonal Mods, and gain bonus Power through the Seasonal Artifact.

By gaining the first 100 ranks, the player unlocks corresponding Season Pass rewards. Each 5 ranks afterwards reward the player with a Bright engram icon1.pngBright Engram. It takes 100,000 experience points to gain one rank. The player's season rank resets at the beginning of each Season.

Experience is earned by defeating enemies, looting chests, completing activities, quests, bounties and seasonal challenges.

The experience bar shows how much experience the player needs to reach the next rank. It is located in the bottom part of the screen and is colored blue. It is hidden, and appears on-screen only when the player earns experience points. When the bar fills up, the player gains a rank and the experience bar is reset. Players can check their progress to the next rank by hovering over the banner on the Seasons menu in the Director.

Experience buffs

Players can increase their experience gains in several ways:

  • The Well-Rested buff is received by all of the player's characters after weekly reset and stays until the player gains 5 ranks during that week. It increases experience gains by 100%.
  • Experience Ghost Mods provide the character with a constant buff to experience gains. Its boost varies from 2% to 12%, depending on the mod used.
  • The XP Bonus from the bottom reward track on the Season Pass increases experience gains by 20% on rank 1, and provides additional bonuses as rank-up rewards:
    • There are 6 XP boosts, each increases the XP Bonus by 2%;
    • There are 4 fireteam XP boosts, each increases experience gains of the player's fireteam members by 2% through the Shared Wisdom buff.

In the base Destiny 2 game, experience used to increase a character's level, which allowed them to wear equipment with a higher power level. Experience was earned by each character separately.

At maximum level, the experience bar turned orange, but could still be filled up. Doing so rewarded the player with a Bright engram icon1.pngBright Engram each time the experience bar was reset. Maximum character level was increased with every expansion, but players had to own the expansion to be able to reach the new level cap.
