Derealize is an Exotic Mission introduced in Destiny 2 during Episode: Heresy Act I. It is accessed through The Last City node in the Director after completing most of the steps in The Taken Path Exotic quest. This mission takes Guardians through various sections of the Dreadnaught to claim the Barrow-Dyad, a new Exotic Strand Submachine Gun with unique Taken-inspired abilities. The mission features combat encounters, platforming sections, and puzzles that must be solved to progress.[1]

Overview

"Derealize" was unexpectedly released early in Episode: Heresy, during the second week of Act I, surprising the Destiny 2 community. Unlike previous Exotic missions that typically launched toward the end of a Season or Episode, "Derealize" was shadow-dropped with minimal announcements.[2] The mission marked a return to the Dreadnaught, Oryx's massive warship that was a major setting in the original Destiny's The Taken King expansion.

The mission is part of a larger quest chain called The Taken Path, which requires players to complete several hidden objectives throughout the game before gaining access to "Derealize". Completing the mission rewards players with the Barrow-Dyad Exotic Submachine Gun along with a follow-up quest to unlock additional perks and catalysts for the weapon.[3]

Access

To unlock the "Derealize" Exotic Mission, Guardians must first complete most of the steps in The Taken Path quest, which involves:[4]

  • Finding a Taken Blight in The Nether activity
  • Collecting Taken Osseous Fragments from various locations
  • Completing three Curse challenges at different locations:
    • Sorrow's Harbor (Moon)
    • Nightmare Hunt: Pride (Moon)
    • Hallowed Grove Lost Sector (EDZ)
  • Activating three Hive statues in The Nether and defeating the spawned mini-bosses

Once these steps are completed, the "Derealize" mission node will appear in The Last City destination on the Director, located under The Nether activities.[5]

Mission Structure

The Mausoleum

The mission begins in The Mausoleum area of the Dreadnaught. Guardians must fight through several waves of Dread enemies, including:[6]

During this section, large Taken eyes appear throughout the area that inflict a debuff called "Suffocating Terror" when in their line of sight. If this debuff reaches 20 stacks, the Guardian will be stunned and killed. Cover must be used strategically to avoid accumulating too many stacks of this debuff.[7]

After clearing the enemies, a hidden Taken portal is revealed that leads to the next area.

The Trenchway

After entering the portal, Guardians arrive at The Trenchway, where they must continue to fight Dread enemies while dealing with the Suffocating Terror mechanic. Defeating all enemies in this section opens the path forward.[8]

Platforming Section

Following the combat sections, Guardians must navigate a platforming segment through the Dreadnaught. The path involves:

  • Jumping across gaps
  • Avoiding Taken energy explosions
  • Finding hidden passages through Hive-infested walls
  • Locating and destroying three hidden Hive crystals to open a sealed door[9]

The three crystals are hidden inside the walls - not in the open area. Players need to look for purple glows under platforms to find them. Once all three crystals are destroyed, a sealed gate opens, allowing access to the final area.[3]

No Escape Puzzle

After progressing further into the mission, Guardians encounter a puzzle similar to the one from The Taken Path quest but with additional complexity. The puzzle works as follows:[10]

  • Four Hive symbols are presented in a specific order (commonly referred to as "Hamburger," "Letter A," "Vex head," and "Turret")
  • Standing on a plate reveals a symbol on a panel
  • A timer labeled "Reality Tears" appears, counting down to automatic teleportation
  • The Guardian must match the symbols in left-to-right order
  • If the shown symbol matches the current position in the sequence, the Guardian must step off the plate in the direction it points
  • If the symbol doesn't match, the Guardian should remain still until teleported to another room
  • The player will be teleported approximately every 8-10 seconds whether they solve the step correctly or not
  • This process repeats until all symbols are activated in the correct order

Completing this puzzle allows progress to the final boss encounter.

Boss Arena

The final area contains the Barrow-Dyad Exotic SMG on a pedestal. When the Guardian claims the weapon, the boss fight begins:[11]

  • The Guardian becomes "Torn Between Dimensions"
  • Three Taken Orbs appear that must be destroyed
  • This summons Xir-Kuur, Not-Taken, a powerful Hive Knight
  • Players must damage Xir-Kuur, Not-Taken until about one-third of his health is depleted
  • The Guardian then becomes "Torn Between Dimensions" again and is transported to the Taken realm
  • In this realm, players fight Xir-Kuur, Taken, a separate boss with slightly different abilities
  • To return to normal reality, players must destroy Taken Blights that appear in the Taken realm
  • This cycle repeats, with players alternating between damaging both versions of Xir-Kuur in their respective realms[7]
  • Large Taken eyes continue to apply the Suffocating Terror debuff during the normal realm phases
  • When Xir-Kuur, Not-Taken is defeated, the two forms merge into a single, more powerful entity
  • At this point, players cannot defeat this merged form and must retreat from the boss room
  • To complete the mission, Guardians must stand on a plate outside the boss room to seal Xir-Kuur inside[12]

Rewards

Successfully completing the "Derealize" Exotic Mission rewards:[13]

  • Barrow-Dyad (Exotic Strand Submachine Gun)
  • Dyadic Ascension (Exotic Quest)
  • 100 Taken Mastery
  • Various crafting Reagents for the Tonic Laboratory

Barrow-Dyad

The Barrow-Dyad is an Exotic Strand Submachine Gun with a unique disc-shaped design. It features the following characteristics:[14]

  • Exotic Intrinsic Perk: Panic Response
    • Dealing damage with Barrow-Dyad builds up Blight
    • When not firing, Blight depletes while gradually refilling the magazine
    • Reloading converts stored Blight into Blighted Seekers that track enemies

Additional perks, traits, and catalysts can be unlocked through the Dyadic Ascension quest and subsequent mission completions:[15]

  • Exotic Trait options:
    • Taken Divergence
    • Taken Ambition
  • Catalyst options (unlocked through further quests):
    • High-Impact Reserves Refit
    • Hatchling Refit
    • One for All Refit
    • Target Lock Refit

Trivia

  • "Derealize" is named after a psychological condition where one feels detached from their surroundings, relating to the "Torn Between Dimensions" mechanic in the mission.
  • The Barrow-Dyad is described as a "precursor" to the Weapons of Sorrow, connecting it to other Exotic weapons in Destiny's lore like Thorn and Touch of Malice.
  • The mission heavily features Taken and Hive lore, exploring the conflict between Xivu Arath's brood and Oryx, the Taken King.
  • The mission's difficulty is described as slightly easier than an Expert-tier Lost Sector but features high enemy density and challenging mechanics.[16]
