Cursed Thrall is an Origin Trait introduced in Season of the Witch that causes enemies to explode after weapon kills following a melee kill, similar to the behavior of Cursed Thrall enemies.

Description

This Origin Trait activates after achieving a melee kill, granting the weapon the ability to cause defeated enemies to explode for a short duration. The perk's name references the Hive Cursed Thrall units known for their explosive deaths.

Mechanics

Activation

  • Triggered by securing a melee kill
  • Provides a 7.5-second buff window
  • Visual indicator appears on screen when active

Explosion Properties

  • Damage: Up to 123.5 in PvE activities
  • Radius: 4.5 meter explosion radius
  • Element: Explosions match the weapon's element type
  • Scaling: Inherits weapon's Combatant Damage Scaling

Limitations

  • PvP damage values are significantly reduced (unspecified amount)
  • Cannot be refreshed while active - must wait for buff to expire
  • Requires direct melee kill, finishers do not activate the perk

Season of the Witch Enhancements

During Season of the Witch, the Cursed Thrall Origin Trait received special enhancements through Seasonal Artifact mods:

Origin Perk Specialization 1

This artifact mod "largely improved" the benefits provided by:

Origin Perk Specialization 2

When an overcharged modifier is active in an activity, weapons with the Cursed Thrall Origin trait are always considered overcharged regardless of:

  • Weapon type
  • Element type
  • Normal overcharge requirements

Synergies

Build Synergies

Weapon Combinations

  • Works best on primary ammo weapons for sustained add-clear
  • Auto Rifles and Pulse Rifles benefit from the range/explosion combination
  • Sidearms complement the close-range melee requirement

Weapons with Cursed Thrall

Weapons that can roll with the Cursed Thrall Origin Trait include:

Strategy Tips

  • Initiate encounters with a melee kill on weak enemies
  • Use the 7.5-second window to clear additional adds
  • Explosions can chain in dense enemy groups
  • Combine with melee-enhancing Exotics for easier activation
  • Consider using Void weapons for additional explosion synergy

Comparison to Similar Perks

  • Dragonfly: Requires precision kills but always active
  • Chain Reaction: Similar explosion effect but doesn't require melee setup
  • Firefly: Combines explosion with reload benefit
  • Cursed Thrall: Higher damage potential but requires specific activation

Trivia

  • Named after the explosive Hive unit type
  • One of the few Origin Traits with a specific activation requirement
  • The explosion visual effect mimics actual Cursed Thrall detonations
  • Part of Season of the Witch's focus on "monster-themed" perks
