Cryptarchs are skilled individuals which are able to decode encrypted engrams picked up by the player, revealing their contents for the player to claim.
Two true Cryptarchs offer their services to players. Master Rahool dwells in The Tower while Tyra Karn can be found in The Farm.
Other individuals with limited decrypting abilities also exist. Tess Everis is the only one that can decrypt Bright Engrams; as well, all Faction leaders automatically decrypt their own faction-specific engrams when they are claimed by the player, and Xur decrypts Fated Engrams upon purchase.
