Charon's Crossing
Information

Charon's Crossing is a region located on Europa in Destiny 2. It serves as the primary landing zone and hub area for the moon, introduced in the Beyond Light expansion.

Overview

Charon's Crossing is situated on the southern edge of the abandoned Clovis Bray Eventide colony. The area serves as Europa's main communications center, though it was abandoned following the Collapse. The location gets its name from Charon, the ferryman of Greek mythology who carried souls across the river Styx, perhaps referencing the crossing between the old Golden Age and the new threat of the Darkness.

Features

Variks' Alcove

The most prominent feature of Charon's Crossing is the makeshift shelter where Variks, the Loyal has established his base of operations. Located in a building directly ahead from the landing zone, Variks serves as Europa's planetary vendor, offering:

  • Empire Hunt missions
  • Europa-specific bounties
  • Sabotage quests
  • Equipment and rewards

Landing Zone

Charon's Crossing functions as the primary fast travel point on Europa, making it a convenient hub for accessing all other locations on the moon. Players spawn here when first arriving on Europa and frequently return to interact with Variks.

Communication Center

The area contains the remnants of Europa's colonial-era communication center. It was from here that Variks sent out his distress signal that initially drew Guardians to Europa at the beginning of the Beyond Light campaign.

Campaign Significance

Charon's Crossing plays a crucial role in the Beyond Light campaign:

  • It serves as the starting point for the campaign
  • Players first encounter the effects of Stasis in this area
  • The location provides stunning views of Jupiter hanging in Europa's sky
  • It acts as the staging ground for assaults against Eramis, Kell of Darkness and the House of Salvation

Connections

From Charon's Crossing, Guardians can access:

  • Eventide Ruins - To the north, containing the remnants of the Clovis Bray facility
  • Asterion Abyss - To the east, featuring Vex structures and the Nexus
  • Cadmus Ridge - To the west, leading to various Fallen strongholds

Activities

While Charon's Crossing itself doesn't host Public Events, it serves as a starting point for numerous activities:

  • Empire Hunts (launched from Variks)
  • Patrol missions
  • Various quest steps throughout the Beyond Light campaign and seasonal content

Trivia

  • The name "Charon's Crossing" is a reference to Greek mythology, where Charon ferried the dead across the river Styx
  • This is one of the few vendor locations in Destiny 2 that doesn't feature a Public Event
  • The area offers some of the best views of Jupiter from Europa's surface
  • The distress signal that originated from this location is what initially brought Guardians to Europa
