Description
Motes of Dark are triangular, glowing objects that represent concentrated Darkness energy. They are of particular value to The Drifter, who invented the banking system to harness their power for summoning Primevals. The motes are shaped like tetrahedron ships, indicating their connection to the Darkness.
Mechanics
Collection
- Dropped by defeated PvE enemies during Gambit matches
- Drop amount varies by enemy type and rank
- Invading Guardians drop 3 motes when defeated
- Maximum carry capacity: 15 motes per player
Banking
- Motes must be deposited at the central Bank location
- Banking specific amounts sends Blockers to the enemy team:
- 5-9 motes: Sends a small Blocker (Taken Phalanx)
- 10-14 motes: Sends a medium Blocker (Taken Knight)
- 15 motes: Sends a large Blocker (Taken Ogre)
- 100 total motes must be banked to summon the Primeval
Risk/Reward
- Dying while carrying motes causes you to lose them
- Lost motes subtract twice their value from team progress
- Example: Dying with 15 motes costs the team 30 points
Strategy
- Bank frequently to avoid losing motes
- Coordinate with teammates for efficient collection
- Clear enemy Blockers quickly to access your Bank
- Every 25 motes banked opens an invasion portal
Lore Significance
The Banks were invented by the Drifter after escaping an ice planet infested with Light-suppressing creatures. He developed this technology specifically to store and harness Motes of Dark for his own purposes.
Distinction from Motes of Light
Unlike Motes of Light from Destiny 1, which were associated with the Light and used for leveling gear, Motes of Dark are explicitly connected to the Darkness and serve a different gameplay purpose.
Trivia
- The triangular shape mirrors the Pyramid ships associated with the Darkness
- Motes glow with a distinct dark energy
- The banking system is unique to Gambit
