A Solar explosion in an area around the target that deals significant damage.—In-game description
Ignitions are a Solar damage mechanic in Destiny 2 introduced with the Solar 3.0 rework during Season of the Haunted. They represent explosive Solar detonations that occur when specific conditions are met, serving as a key component of Solar subclass synergy.

Overview
Ignitions are fiery explosions that deal area-of-effect Solar damage. They work in tandem with the Scorch mechanic to create powerful chain reactions and serve as a primary source of burst damage for Solar subclasses.
Triggering Ignitions
Scorch-Based Ignitions
The primary method of causing Ignitions:
- Targets accumulate Scorch stacks from various sources
- Upon reaching 100 Scorch stacks, the target Ignites
- The Ignition consumes all Scorch stacks on detonation
- Damage type inherits properties from the initial Scorch source
Direct Ignition Sources
Several abilities and effects cause immediate Ignitions without Scorch:
Class Abilities
- Titan: Consecration Aspect - Second wave ignites Scorched targets
- Hunter: Gunpowder Gamble - Creates explosive that Ignites on detonation
- Hunter: Weighted Throwing Knife - Ignites Scorched targets on precision hit
- All Classes: Solar Supers with Ember of Combustion Fragment
Weapon Perks
- Incandescent - Can trigger Ignitions through Scorch accumulation
- Various Exotic weapons with Solar synergy
Mechanics
Damage Properties
- No damage falloff in PvE activities
- Damage falloff applies in Crucible/PvP
- Inherits damage modifiers from the triggering source
- Benefits from ability-specific exotic armor bonuses
Damage Inheritance
The first Scorch instance tags all subsequent damage:
- Melee-applied Scorch creates melee-tagged Ignitions
- Grenade Scorch results in grenade-damage Ignitions
- This affects perk activations like Sunbracers
Damage Scaling Examples
- Synthoceps: 150% damage buff applies to melee-triggered Ignitions
- Verity's Brow: Grenade damage bonuses affect grenade-sourced Ignitions
- Global buffs like Radiant apply to all Ignition damage
Enhancing Ignitions
Fragments
- Ember of Eruption: Increases Ignition area of effect
- Ember of Char: Ignitions spread Scorch to nearby targets
- Ember of Combustion: Super final blows cause Ignitions
- Ember of Ashes: More Scorch stacks (indirect enhancement)
Aspects
Various Solar Aspects interact with Ignitions:
- Generate more Scorch for easier Ignitions
- Provide direct Ignition sources
- Enhance Ignition damage or frequency
Strategic Applications
PvE Usage
- Most effective against elite enemies, champions, and bosses
- Red-bar enemies typically die before reaching 100 Scorch stacks
- Chain Ignitions for room clearing with Ember of Char
- Stack multiple Scorch sources for faster Ignitions
PvP Considerations
- Damage falloff reduces effectiveness at range
- Requires tactical Scorch stacking
- Best used in confined spaces
- Timing crucial due to Scorch duration
Synergies
Scorch Sources
Combine multiple Scorch applications:
- Solar grenades for area denial
- Incandescent weapons for add clear
- Melee abilities for burst application
- Team coordination for rapid stacking
Build Examples
- Titan Solar 3.0: Consecration + Synthoceps for massive Ignition damage
- Warlock Solar 3.0: Sunbracers + Ember of Char for Ignition chains
- Hunter Solar 3.0: Gunpowder Gamble + Young Ahamkara's Spine for explosive gameplay
Tips and Tricks
- Kill 3-4 enemies with Incandescent near a tougher target to trigger Ignition
- Use high-Scorch abilities first to "tag" damage type
- Coordinate with fireteam for rapid 100-stack accumulation
- Position enemies for maximum Ignition overlap
- Combine with Solar weapon perks for consistent triggers
Patch History
- Season of the Haunted: Introduced with Solar 3.0
- Various Updates: Balance adjustments to Scorch stacking rates
- Ongoing: Exotic armor interactions refined
Trivia
- Ignitions don't count as ability kills for some bounties unless triggered by that ability type
- The visual effect scales with the Ignition's damage
- Multiple Ignitions can chain infinitely with proper setup
- Some bosses have damage gates that prevent Ignition damage
